TheatreWorks presents THE GOOD FARMER, a winning play of 2017’s 24-Hour Playwriting Competition

THE GOOD FARMER

TheatreWorks’ Performance Tour is back in March this year! We bring to the community The Good Farmer, a winning play from TheatreWorks’ well-established 24-Hour Playwriting Competition in 2017.

Touring since 2009, the Performance Tour has featured social issues that resonate with audiences in the heartlands. In the past years, we have dealt with issues such as mental health, mixed marriages and their prejudices, and inter-generational relationships, to name a few. With The Good Farmer, TheatreWorks continues its commitment to raise awareness of human and social issues through the arts and to provide an open and inviting platform for the discussion of these topics.

The Good Farmer explores sibling rivalry and favouritism in the family. Tensions arise when twin brothers Jacob and Joseph are placed into different streams after Primary Four, and Jacob begins to feel that their father favours his twin, Joseph.

Playwright Christopher shares, “The Good Farmer is partly inspired by my experience growing up as an elder sibling, as well as by conversations with relatives and friends about their opinions of being treated or treating themselves according to the order of their birth. The position of the elder sibling is rather paradoxical; you are expected to perform better than your younger siblings despite your parents’ lack of parenting experience and the lack of older siblings to learn from. As an older sibling you are expected to be taller, wiser, stronger and more responsible just on the basis of age”.

It’s inevitable that siblings are compared to one another, but where do you draw the line? Is sibling rivalry considered healthy competition? What if that’s mixed together with favouritism? Will Dad ever admit that he has a favourite?

The Good Farmer brings up questions about family, relationships and attitudes that many people choose not to answer…

As part of the performances, post-show discussions after each performance will be held. We hope that the performance becomes a catalyst for audiences to reflect and discuss the issues brought up during the play.

Synopsis
Jacob Teo and Joseph Teo, identical twins but born minutes apart. Jacob on 30th June and Joseph on 1st July.Out of convenience, their birthdays were celebrated on the same day each year on 1st July… starting from when they were 11, the year they were separated into EM1 and EM2, all the way till adulthood.

One child excelled in his studies while the other struggled to keep up.  Average Jacob Teo versus Public Service Commission scholar Joseph Teo.

Was it favouritism or inferiority complex that made them different? And what happens when one child goes missing? The Good Farmer, brings up questions that many people choose not to answer.

1) Production Coordinator

The Production Coordinator will be responsible for operational and production related arrangements of all contracted productions. This includes:

  • Contracting and coordinating various aspects of the productions including preparing, monitoring and maintaining production budgets, purchasing and rental of equipment
  • Scheduling of meetings, rehearsals, technical rehearsals and performances
  • Arrangement of hotel accommodations, booking of (touring company) air travel, facilitation of contracts and visas for artists and production personnel;Hiring and supervising technical staff
  • Assisting in the general maintenance of the company’s rehearsal and performance spaces, as well as all equipment;
  • All other duties as assigned with regards to the preparation, operation and production of the company’s Singapore and touring productions.

Requirements:

  • Meticulous and a multi-tasker and able to work within tight timelines
  • Strong interest in the arts is a MUST
  • Strong administrative, communication and inter-personal skills are a MUST
  • Proficiency in MS Office and preferably familiar with software such as Autocad
  • Minimum 2 years working experience in a similar position and minimum Diploma Holder from a recognised educational institution

Remuneration will commensurate with candidates’ work experience

 

2) Partnership Executive

The Partnership Executive will lead the developing and implementing of TheatreWorks’ partnership initiatives with various stakeholders.

Partnerships

  • To grow Company’s Partnership portfolio and revenue streams including corporate sponsorships and fundraisers
  • To grow Company’s reach to potential audiences while deepening relationships with current audiences
  • To maintain and deepen relationships with existing partners, donors and stakeholders

Requirements:

  • Creative and imaginative
  • Strong interest in the arts is a MUST
  • Strong administrative, communication and inter-personal skills are a MUST
  • Proficiency in MS Office and preferably familiar with software such as Photoshop, Illustrator;
  • Minimum 2 years working experience in a similar position and minimum Diploma Holder from a recognised educational institution

Remuneration will commensurate with candidates’ work experience

 

3) Engagement Executive

The Engagement Executive will be responsible for reaching out to the Company’s community of artists, audiences, patrons and other stakeholders.

  • To assist the Managing Director in matters relating to the Company’s Engagement and Outreach programmes and activities which includes strategising and creating programmes / activities that will increase the Company’s engagement with its community of artists, audiences, patrons and other stakeholders.  The overall aim is to increase the Company’s reach and profile, leading to the enlargement of the Company’s support base that includes audiences and stakeholders.
  • To create content for the Company’s websites and to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of these websites.
  • To promote the Company’s connections and information flow with its defined ‘community’ as listed above.
  • To assist in the conceptualising and developing methods and ideas to publicise the company’s programmes including productions, exhibitions, presentations and screenings.
  • To work with and supervise appointed project staff, with the aim to co-ordinate and manage the above programmes in the most efficient manner.

  • Conceive and Implement Publicity Strategies
  • Conceptualise and develop methods and ideas to publicise the company’s programmes including productions, exhibitions, presentations and screenings
    Strategise and manage the usage of online and offline media such as EDMs, social media, print and broadcast media
  • Liaise with design houses on briefs and concepts for publicising company’s programmes
  • Liaise with designers / printers for the production of publicity collaterals
    Management of Publicity and Media Platforms
  • Organise, manage and maintain press and media relations for the company
    Organise, manage and maintain company’s mailing list

Open call – Join us for a film seminar!

Notes on roads, trips,
and other possible slips and falls. 

A film seminar by Heman Chong This film seminar compliments Heman’s exhibition ‘Because, The Night’ that will occur for 6 nights in November at 72-13. The themes within the film seminar will overlap with the bookshop, touching on inequality, racism, homophobia, overpopulation, forced migration, exploitation of labor, overconsumption, climate change and many other issues affecting modern society.

When something or someone is trying to get from Point A to Point B, we have the possible beginnings of a road movie. I have been watching and re-watching a selection of about 150 films that I have collected since 2003. They have always inspired me; satisfying and igniting my wanderlust at the same time.

I have always wanted to make a film seminar for artists, filmmakers and writers who are interested to think about, around and inside all sorts of different journeys. So, here we are. We’ll sit and watch 9 different films, in their entirety, over 3 days and form an informal discussion around what we are seeing.

The films will only be revealed at the time of the screening. Something that we need to agree upon is whatever we talk about in those 3 days, while we’re watching those films; the material we generated will be collectively available to each of us in the film seminar as raw material to develop a story involving a road trip, shared amongst the participants of this film seminar.

We are looking at a small group of individuals to join us on this journey. Please be willing to commit 3 full days between 10 am to 6 pm each day between 20-22 October 2017 to be present at 72-13. TheatreWorks 24-Hour Playwriting Competition is back!

The much-awaited TheatreWorks’ 24-Hour Playwriting Competition is back! This unique Competition marks a milestone this year as we celebrate its 20th edition!

The site of the competition has always been quirky and inspiring, and it is no exception this year. To be held at the rustically inspiring Kampung Kampus, Home of Ground-Up Initiative, the site is surrounded by lush greenery and fertile ground – a place for developing and practising sustainable living methods.

Who knows, these 24 hours at Kampung Kampus may not only inspire your writing, but it may also change your perception and attitude to life. Especially with the advent of climate change, the advent of global populist and protectionist trends, how are we to respond? Can we, in our own ways, make an impact?

The competition, as in previous years, is a platform to discover potential playwrights in our midst.  One of the winners will have his / her play developed by theatre professionals and produced in full. This production will be taken on a performance tour to the South East District in the first quarter of 2018.

The 24-Hour Playwriting Competition 2017 is presented as part of TheatreWorks Writers’ Laboratory Writing & Community Programme, in partnership with the South East Community Development Council. Writing & Community is a holistic, unique programme that serves the community through harnessing individual talents and creatives.

Writing & Community is a strand of TheatreWorks Engagement to encourage audience appreciation of the Arts, and deepen the knowledge of its patrons as well as stakeholders.

Choreography: Designing Space and Time – Artist Talk Happening Tonight!

In conjunction with TheatreWorks’ upcoming production in late July, The Roundest Circle, we also organised a talk  on contemporary dance!

Tuesday 11 July 2017, 8pm @ 72-13 Mohamed Sultan Road!

The talk will be conducted by independent dance artist Lee Mun Wai, who was one of the founding members of T.H.E Dance Company (2008 – 2015). It has been Mun Wai’s current interest in his own practice to think about choreography and the body in expanded ways.

Using the fundamentals of dance making and choreography – designing / ordering / arranging bodies in space and time – Mun Wai will discuss Associate Artist Eng Kai Er’s choreographic process in general, and with respect to The Roundest Circle.

Dramatised Readings 2017

TheatreWorks Writers’ Lab is thrilled to present a series of dramatised readings happening on 3 June 2017, from 2 to 10pm.

In line with our Writing from The Heart Workshop starting from 29 May to 4 June, these readings will showcase the work of three talented playwrights who have participated in the previous round workshop in 2014/2015.

Since the workshops, these three writers have received guidance from acclaimed writer Tony Perez, through a series of dramaturgy clinics, further editing and refining their scripts.

TheatreWorks is dedicated to nurturing and developing new writing from the community. Our script development focuses on exploration and creative dialogue between artists, away from the pressures of performance outcomes. It is not intended that writers will produce a performance-ready script by the end of the entire process; nor to conclude the process with the public reading this June. It is more to get feedback and responses from an interested audience to help contribute to the development of these newly written scripts.

Go Home | By Isaac Lim
Father and son. Estranged. They return to a house filled with memories, both pleasant and painful. The two men negotiate each other, as they share secrets and lies. Through intimate conversations, multiple swearings, and loads of baggage, emotional and otherwise, this forgotten space opens up to be more dirty than it appears. Together, they try to make it livable again. Can they find the comfort they long for in a home they never quite belong?

13.13.13 | By Tan Mae Shen
William and Sam have the perfect relationship. Sam doesn’t want children; William doesn’t want to be married. 13.13.13. explores the form, substance and intimacy of a relationship when a binding agreement unravels.

Of What Could Be | By Beverly Wee
Exploring the conflict between pursuing our dreams and the pressures of the practical aspects of life. Whether it’s missed opportunities of the past we hold on to or the “if only” events we long for believing they will make our lives better. When faced with a second chance, will you dare to take it and is it truly the answer to a more perfect life? Are our ideal scenarios we imagine truly as perfect as we project them to be when they play out in real life? Do we chase our ideals or learn to be content with what we what have?

Told through a complicated relationship brought about by situational circumstances, GIRL takes a second chance to pursue what she always believed would make her life more perfect at the expense of what she has. Life is messy and complicated. And the ones who stay in our lives are the ones we choose, who choose us back.

Our Writing From The Heart playwriting workshop is back again, by popular demand!

Interested in playwriting but feel that you aren’t certain if you could write a play? Well, we have good news for you! Our ever popular Writing from the Heart Playwriting Workshops is back!

From 29 May to 4 June to join us for this week-long workshops, headed by renowned writer Tony Perez! From chakra points to meditative sessions, Tony will guide participants on a soul-searching journey, and from there lead you to writing the play you’ve always wanted to!

Emerging Singaporean playwright Helmi Yusof, first penned his new play My Mother Buys Condoms at the workshop in 2014. It was then further developed over a period of one year through a series of dramaturgical clinics under the guidance of Perez, before being presented to the public at a dramatised reading in July 2015. Since then, it had been picked up by local theatre company, W!ld Rice, and staged professionally as a full production at the Singapore Theatre Festival in July 2016.

“Tony Perez is a wonderful, thoroughly unconventional and intuitive teacher. He talks about everything from chakra points and meditation to Freud and Jung, and you’re asked to try them out in class, so you have to have a very, very open mind.”  – Helmi Yusof, participant in 2015.

After the successful edition of Writing from the Heart from 2014 to 2016, TheatreWork’s Writing and Community is thrilled to invite Tony Perez back to conduct an interactive playwriting workshop this May 2017.

This series of workshops aims to:

  • Unearth and inspire new playwriting enthusiasts from within the community
  • Share one of the region’s best playwriting skills and expertise with the community
  • Develop new plays through a post-workshop mentorship and dramaturgy programme

In April, TheatreWorks Associate Artist, Eng Kai Er kicks off our main season with two programmes as part of her Associateship!

First up — A Conversation with Eng Kai Er On 5 April. Kai will share about her latest venture, running a performing arts studio — Make It Share It (MISI).

In this session, Kai will discuss MISI’s programmes from a personal perspective; expressing her love and thinking of body-based communication, performance, and labour; and also her thoughts of inclusion/exclusion in the performing arts and the conditions of the current arts ecosystem.

Join us for this engaging talk as Kai highlights the parallels and contradictions between performance-making and running a studio.

Then join us once again on 21 & 22 April for The Roundest Circle. Developed in collaboration by Eng Kari Er with dance artists Faye Lim and Felicia Lim. See what they have been exploring since January to April and share with them what you think during the post-show dialogue!
